KEYAH/BLU THE FINAL FINESSE

The South Londoner KEYAH/BLU's debut EP Sorry, I Forgot You Were Coming has just emerged, and it couldn't be better. Despite the multi-facetted nature of Keyah's sound, she also has a distinct identity full of raw, uncensored expression with a hint of sexy husk. She only started releasing music in 2018, her first single 'Sweet' - a minimal hip hop track with stormy bass. Since then she's released three more singles, two of which appear on the new EP. Sorry, I Forgot You Were Coming moves through artfully crafted modern beats, atmospheric synth, Keyah's signature thundery bass and a combination of rap and singing which feels intimate and exposing. The fifth track on the EP 'The Final Finesse' drifts into sonic territory yet untrodden...it's the kind of song you might expect to find on a modern alt-folk compilation. Electric guitar strums are washed in serenity whilst Keyah's voice reveals a fresh vulnerability and melancholia as she sings "I don't need no sympathy, getting lighter by the way, it's getting brighter by the day, I hope you're coming too, I only vouch for you, damn me to be true, I only cry for you". Backing vocals swirl amidst ad-libbed layers, and toward the end of the track, Keyah's lead vocal transforms into an expression of full of soul and new-found courage, exposing an incredible singing voice that leaves a stain. On April 4th, KEYHA/BLU will play at Studio 9294. -Ellie Rose-Davies
